Zhang Ailian (张爱莲) — Media Profile & Archive
This archive documents the case of Zhang Ailian (张爱莲). It preserves the source record for a Falun Gong practitioner from Zaozhuang, Shandong Province, sentenced to three and a half years in prison. The record below draws on the Prisoners of Conscience database of the Chinese Human Rights Defenders network (record entered September 17, 2026), which cites a Falun Gong–affiliated press report dated August 8, 2026.
Case chronology
- September 2025 — Zhang distributes Falun Gong–related materials at the Qingtan Road wholesale market (Bada wholesale market), Shizhong District, Zaozhuang City. Security staff observe her on surveillance cameras and report her. Police track her to her residence, search it, and take her away. She is placed under criminal detention at the Yuelou Detention Center (岳楼看守所), Shizhong District, Zaozhuang, and is later formally arrested and indicted.
- September–October 2025 — While detained, police make repeated visits to her home, warning and pressuring her husband, who is seriously ill. He dies at home less than a month after her arrest. Zhang is not permitted to return home for his funeral.
- 2026 — Zhang is sentenced to three years and six months in prison (charge unspecified in the record) and transferred to the Shandong Provincial Women’s Prison (山东省女子监狱). Her term runs to March 2029.
Source provenance and evidentiary limitations
- The database record is maintained by an established human-rights monitoring network and lists a specific detention location, sentence, and term end date.
- The underlying press report (a Falun Gong–affiliated outlet) was cited by the database but could not be independently opened by the preparer; narrative details above come from the database record itself.
- The criminal charge, the verdict document, and court of conviction are not identified in available records. Her exact birth date is given only as “around 1958–1959.”
- No PRC official or state-media account of this case was found.
Name-collision and disambiguation record
- A 2013 Baoji, Shaanxi case involving a “Zhang Ailian” arrested in November 2012 and tried in June 2013 at Jintai Court is a different person: the localities (Shaanxi/Baoji vs. Shandong/Zaozhuang) conflict, and no link between the two records exists. The Baoji reports are preserved separately and must not be merged into this record.
- Tu Ailian (涂爱莲) of Hubei and Li Ailian (李爱莲) of Shandong are different persons with similar romanized names; neither is Zhang Ailian.
