Zhu Peijuan (朱培娟)
Status: Reported detained without trial (as of August 31, 2026, per prisoner-list report)
Summary. Zhu Peijuan (朱培娟) is a rights-defense petitioner from Haimen, Nantong, in Jiangsu Province, who was taken into custody in December 2023 after years of petitioning over her uncle's death in a 2019 gas explosion. A Chinese prisoner-listing report dated August 31, 2026 names her among detainees awaiting trial in Jiangsu. Her case has been documented by an international human-rights prisoner database and by Chinese-language rights media.
Background. In the early morning of August 16, 2019, Zhu Zhongyun, Zhu Peijuan's uncle, died in an explosion at a residential building in Haimen. Zhu Peijuan and her family disputed the official finding on the cause of the accident, saying the investigation conclusion lacked a seal and signatures while local media coverage had pointed to a gas-pipeline leak. (As reported by 民生观察 and recorded in the prisoner database.)
Petitioning and interception. Zhu began petitioning for an explanation of her uncle's death. On October 10, 2021, while traveling to Beijing to petition, she was intercepted and beaten, suffering a fractured ankle and other injuries, assessed as first-degree minor injury. (Same sources.)
Detention. On December 25, 2023, Zhu was detained in Langfang, Hebei, where police said she was wanted on suspicion of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble." She was brought back to Nantong, criminally detained on December 26, and placed under residential surveillance at a designated location on December 30, 2023. Her lawyer's requests to meet her were denied on grounds of her health; her husband Xu Jian, who spoke out for her online, was himself detained in early January 2024. (民生观察, January 7, 2024.)
Bail. According to the prisoner-database record, Zhu was released on bail pending trial for one year after the residential-surveillance period; the bail term expired on June 24, 2024. No attributable public record of what followed has been located.
Current status. The August 31, 2026 monthly report of 维权网 lists Zhu Peijuan among 13 people in the Jiangsu group of detainees awaiting trial. Her custody status beyond this dated listing has not been independently confirmed.
