Su Li (Hebi City, Henan)

Ms. Su Li is a 32-year-old Falun Gong practitioner from Hebi City, Henan Province, and a mother of two young children. On August 25, 2026, she was sentenced to one year and three months in prison, with a fine of 2,000 yuan, for practicing Falun Gong.

Ms. Su was arrested on May 22, 2025, about a week after she was reported for distributing Falun Gong informational materials. Police traced her mother-in-law’s address through her e-bike license plate, raided her home, and confiscated her printer, Falun Gong books, and materials. She fled before they arrived and was later captured in Wuhan through GPS tracking of her phone, then taken to a brainwashing center in Hebi, where her husband and mother were pressured to persuade her to renounce the practice.

She was later released on bail but faced near-daily harassment: officers from the Gucheng Police Station photographed her at home almost every day and followed her whenever she went out. Under the sustained pressure she became mentally unstable; her husband sent her to a psychiatric hospital in November 2025, and she was discharged on January 13, 2026. In April 2026 police ordered her to write a statement admitting guilt; when she refused, she was arrested again on May 11, 2026 and placed in the Hebi City Detention Center. Her case was submitted by the Economic Development Zone Police Department to the Shancheng District Procuratorate, which indicted her and forwarded the case to the Shancheng District Court. She stood trial on August 25, 2026, testified in her own defense, and her lawyer entered a not-guilty plea. A guilty verdict was issued on August 31, 2026. She is appealing.

Falun Gong is a spiritual practice suppressed by the Chinese authorities since 1999. Sentences in such cases are typically imposed under Article 300 of the PRC Criminal Law, though no court document for Ms. Su’s case has been made public.
