Source chronology
- 2003 — first sentence. Per the CHRD database, Chen Xiuling was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2003 for practicing Falun Gong. No contemporaneous reporting of this case has been located.
- March 2023 — re-arrest. She was taken into custody again and held at the Weifang City Detention Center, Shandong.
- September–October 2023 — second sentence. She was sentenced to four years in prison; the charge was not recorded. The CHRD entry cites Minghui (明慧网) as its source for this case.
- December 19, 2023 — CHRD database entry. The Chinese Human Rights Defenders prisoners-of-conscience database (record poc_c_00460) consolidated the case: female, in her 60s in 2023, from Shouguang, Weifang, Shandong; charge listed as “unknown”; sentence 4 years; recorded location Weifang City Detention Center; sentence ends 2027.3; status “in prison.”
- August 31, 2026 — 维权网 Issue 131. The Rights Defense Network monthly report’s in-custody name index lists “Chen Xiuling,” consistent with continued detention through at least that date.
Provenance and grading
- The CHRD database is an independent human-rights NGO record and is the strongest — effectively the only — structured source for this case. Its source for the 2023 proceedings is Minghui, the Falun Gong–affiliated outlet, whose own dedicated article on Chen Xiuling has not been located. The 2023 arrest and sentencing facts are attributed to that single reporting lineage.
- The 维权网 name index corroborates only that she was counted among reported in-custody political prisoners/prisoners of conscience in August 2026; it provides no independent case detail.
- No second independent source for either the 2003 nine-year sentence or the 2023 four-year sentence has been found.
