SOURCE CLAIM (Chinese Human Rights Defenders, October 21, 2026, citing the Rights Defense Network): Police in Guangzhou have held labor rights advocate Feng Rui (冯睿), known online as Xiao Wu (小五), since September 14, 2026, on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” Feng is being held at the Yuexiu District Detention Center in Guangzhou, where he has reportedly been interrogated nearly every day — sometimes up to three times a day — since September 17. CHRD reports that interrogations continued even when Feng was vomiting, suffering from diarrhea, and so weak he had to be moved in a wheelchair, and that he has reportedly missed meals as a result. Feng also has a cervical spine condition that long questioning sessions are likely to aggravate, according to the report. Free China Movement labels the interrogation and health details SOURCE CLAIM: they rest on the Rights Defense Network’s reporting as relayed by CHRD and have not been independently confirmed by the authorities, who have not publicly commented.
Detention corroborated across multiple reports
VERIFIED FACT (multi-source reporting): Feng’s detention itself has been reported through several independent chains over the past two weeks. On October 6, the Rights Defense Network, citing Hong Kong’s Ming Pao, reported that Feng had been detained and had met with a lawyer, with the suspected offence not yet clear. On October 7–8, France’s Libération, relayed by RFI, reported that Feng’s supporters’ group had confirmed he was criminally detained in Guangzhou on September 14 on suspicion of “picking quarrels,” that he had met a lawyer, and that contributors to his annual labor report had also been summoned and questioned about the document in detail, with police repeatedly suggesting it contained false content. On October 21, the independent Chinese-language platform China Focus reported that Feng is held at Guangzhou’s Yuexiu District Detention Center and had met with a lawyer. CHRD’s October 21 report is the first to describe the interrogation regime and Feng’s deteriorating health in detention.
Five years of documenting labor rights
SOURCE CLAIM (CHRD, citing the Rights Defense Network): Feng runs a WeChat public account, “Chiapas Dongfeng TV,” which since 2021 has published an annual review of labor rights incidents compiled from public information — covering pay cuts and wage arrears, gig and platform workers, migrant workers, social insurance, workers with disabilities and illnesses, and workplace accidents. The Human Rights in China weekly brief describes the latest review as a 200-page document. The account has not been updated since Feng’s detention. Libération reported that the review — the fifth annual edition — appears to have drawn investigators’ attention.
Rights group calls for release and medical care
VERIFIED FACT: CHRD called on Chinese authorities to release Feng Rui immediately and unconditionally and to drop all charges against him, and, pending his release, to end the coercive interrogations, give him proper medical care and food, and guarantee his access to lawyers chosen by him or his family. CHRD noted that interrogating a detainee who is sick, exhausted and not adequately nourished raises concerns about torture or other ill-treatment and about the reliability of any statements obtained, and that China’s own Criminal Procedure Law prohibits extracting confessions through torture. Guangzhou was also where journalist Huang Xueqin and labor advocate Wang Jianbing were prosecuted; Huang’s five-year term ended on September 18, 2026, with her physical release still awaiting confirmation, as Free China Movement reported. Canada’s Bill C-219, which writes a legal definition of “prisoners of conscience” into sanctions law, passed the House of Commons on October 8 and is now before the Senate, as Free China Movement reported.
Reporting note: The detention, the detention-center location and the lawyer meeting are corroborated by multiple reports published between October 6 and October 21. The suspicion cited by police, the interrogation frequency and Feng’s medical condition are attributed to the Rights Defense Network’s reporting as relayed by CHRD on October 21 and are labelled SOURCE CLAIM above; no official statement from Guangzhou police has been located. Free China Movement will update this article as the case proceeds.
