International Association of Chinese Workers (IACW)

The International Association of Chinese Workers (IACW) — 国际华工联合会 — was the workers’ organisation of the Free China Network, the coalition organised by the Free China Movement in 1998. Its page on the original FreeChina.net website (1998–2001) is preserved in this archive.

Workers’ activities and policies

Within the Free China Movement’s programme, the IACW’s field was the rights of Chinese workers. The Movement’s founding Action Goals (1998) committed the coalition to help support the development of a free trade-union movement in China and to organise for the rights of all Chinese citizens. In its June 1998 statements, the Movement warned that continued repression of dissent would close the door to dialogue with the era’s most exposed workers — the laid-off workers of the state sector, together with citizens and farmers — and called for their grievances to be resolved peacefully.

The Free China Movement’s present-day policy work on these questions is the paper Labor, Wages & Social Protection in Mainland China.

The IACW web record, 1998–2001

The Association’s entire surviving web presence is a single page, unchanged across all three archived captures (February 1999, January 2001, July 2001). It is reproduced as the archive record IACW Homepage (Recovered, 1999). The page lists the Association’s external-liaison standing committee as published at the time: Zhao Pinlu (USA) and Yue Wu (Paris).

The Workers’ Chronicle

The Association now maintains a year-by-year record of mainland Chinese workers – Workers’ Chronicle, 1995–present – and a standing statement of its positions: IACW Stands & Policies.
