Xie Yanyi (谢燕益) — Human-Rights Lawyer, Writer and 709 Detainee

Xie Yanyi (谢燕益) is a Chinese human-rights lawyer and writer who was detained during the July 2015 “709” crackdown. He is released and is not currently recorded as serving a prison sentence.

709 detention and later advocacy

Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International documented Xie’s detention and the broader post-709 restrictions imposed on rights lawyers. Later public activity must be treated separately from licensing, employment, travel and surveillance status.

Current status and 2026 provenance

A dated 2026 source confirms continuing public legal-rights activity: on May 25, 2026, the Haidian court in Beijing held the first hearing in Xie’s lawsuit against China State Railway Group and related entities over a baggage-inspection dispute at Tianjin station. Xie’s public hearing report connected the case to privacy, human dignity and passenger rights and asked for a collegial panel. This evidence supports continuing public advocacy in 2026 but does not establish restoration of his law license or resolve present travel, employment or surveillance restrictions.
