China’s rights-defense lawyers and legal advocates have used the law itself to defend clients, challenge unlawful detention, seek access to counsel, contest coerced confessions, defend religious freedom and civil society, and insist that legal procedure should restrain state power.
This hub documents lawyers, disbarred lawyers, legal advocates and related defenders who have faced detention, imprisonment, disappearance, surveillance, license revocation, employment pressure, travel restrictions or other documented retaliation connected to rights-defense work. It distinguishes verified facts from allegations and keeps custody, conviction, sentencing, release and post-release restrictions as separate events.

For every case, Free China separates arrest, detention, charge, trial, conviction, sentence, release and post-release restrictions. State allegations are attributed as state allegations rather than adopted as fact. Release or sentence-completion dates are not projected from sentence length alone unless time-served credit and other operative legal orders are verified.
