HONG KONG, September 12, 2026 — Seven months after Hong Kong’s High Court sentenced publisher Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison, renewed reporting about his prolonged isolation, health and family is putting the human consequences of that sentence back into international focus.
Lai, 78, founder of the now-closed Apple Daily, was sentenced on February 9, 2026 after convictions on two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and one count involving seditious publications. Hong Kong authorities say the case involved grave national-security offenses and maintain that the sentence demonstrates the rule of law. Press-freedom and human-rights organizations have sharply criticized the prosecution and sentence.
A sentence that could consume the rest of his life
At Lai’s age, a 20-year term could keep him imprisoned for the remainder of his life. The Committee to Protect Journalists says he has spent much of his detention in solitary confinement and cites concerns from his family and lawyers about the effects of prolonged isolation and chronic illnesses, including diabetes and hypertension.

According to The Times, Jimmy Lai learned of her illness through family and friends and was overcome with emotion; father and daughter remain separated and communicate through delayed letters.
That family story does not change the legal questions in Lai’s case, but it makes the consequences of prolonged imprisonment unmistakably human.
From press-freedom case to historical record
Lai’s prosecution cannot be understood only as the story of one publisher. Apple Daily ceased publication in 2021 after authorities froze assets and arrested senior figures. Lai’s case has since become a central test in the international debate over press freedom, peaceful political advocacy and the reach of Hong Kong’s national-security system.
