WASHINGTON — Free China Movement calls on relevant U.S. authorities to promptly clarify the reported detention of Chinese rights advocate Li Qing and to ensure that she has immediate access to counsel and every protection required by U.S. law.
Supporters report that Li Qing was detained while heading toward a protest near the Chinese Embassy in Washington. FCM has verified Li Qing’s identity and public protest activity, but has not independently confirmed the reported arrest, its legal basis, the responsible agency, or claims that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has taken or will take custody.
FCM asks authorities to clarify: whether Li Qing is presently in custody; which agency detained her; the legal basis for any detention; whether charges or citations have been issued; whether ICE or another Department of Homeland Security component is involved; and whether Li Qing has access to legal counsel.
If immigration proceedings are involved, all applicable protections against return to persecution or torture must be respected, and Li Qing must have a meaningful opportunity to present any claims available to her under U.S. law.
FCM also cautions against speculation. No claim that the reported detention was motivated by Li Qing’s political activity or connected to security arrangements surrounding a Chinese official’s visit should be treated as established without evidence.
The immediate need is simple: establish the facts, provide counsel, apply the law transparently and protect due process.
