Free China Movement Calls for Disclosure of Li Kangmeng’s Status Nearly Four Years After White Paper Protests
The Free China Movement (FCM) today called on the mainland Chinese Communist government to disclose the whereabouts, legal status and condition of Li Kangmeng (李康梦), a student widely associated in contemporaneous reporting with the November 2022 Nanjing blank-paper protest.
Nearly four years after the White Paper Movement, independently verifiable public information about Li’s present status remains difficult to establish. FCM stresses that reports of detention, disappearance and current status must be distinguished from independently confirmed facts.
“When authorities possess the power to detain, censor and erase public discussion, uncertainty can itself become a form of repression,” FCM said. “The answer is not speculation. The answer is disclosure, due process and independent verification.”
FCM calls for immediate disclosure of Li’s whereabouts and condition; disclosure of any legal basis and place of detention if she remains in custody; access to family and legal counsel; and protection for peaceful expression and protest.
The organization also urges international media, universities, human-rights organizations and democratic governments to seek verifiable information about Li and others whose status became unclear following the 2022 protests.
