Workers’ Chronicle 1998

Major actions and protests

June 1998 — the laid-off workers in the movement’s statements. In its statements of 21-22 June 1998 supporting the 56 arrested dissidents and Xu Wenli, the Free China Movement warned that continued repression would close the door to peaceful resolution of the grievances of the era’s most exposed groups – the laid-off workers of the state sector, together with citizens and farmers. (Statement, 21 June 1998; Statement, 22 June 1998)

Organising and groups

1998 — the IACW itself. The International Association of Chinese Workers is listed on the Free China Network’s site as the network’s workers’ organisation; its page names an external-liaison standing committee in the United States and Paris. (Recovered IACW page)

Viewpoints and stands

1998 — free trade unions in the founding programme. The Free China Movement’s Action Goals (1998) commit the coalition to help support the development of a free trade-union movement in China. (Action Goals)

About this page

Workers’ Chronicle 1998 – The network era. The Free China Movement’s own archived record (FreeChina.net, 1998-2001) is a primary source for these years. Entries are added as sources are verified; an empty section means the backfill has not reached it yet, not that nothing happened.
