Research notice: unresolved whereabouts
This page is an unresolved-case research record, not a finding about Gao Zhisheng’s present custody or condition. Who is Gao Zhisheng?
Gao Zhisheng (高智晟) is a Mainland Chinese human-rights lawyer known for representing religious communities, victims of forced eviction, advocates of free expression, and people challenging corruption. He previously experienced imprisonment, incommunicado detention, and reported torture connected to his legal and human-rights work.
What authoritative sources report
USCIRF records that Gao disappeared from his home on August 13, 2017 and lists his current status as unknown. In a communication dated February 28, 2025, UN Special Procedures stated that Gao’s fate and whereabouts had been unknown since 2017, that his family reportedly had been unable to contact him, and that the case remained outstanding before the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances.
The Mainland Chinese Communist Government’s 2025 response states that Gao completed a three-year sentence and returned to Yulin following his release in August 2014. It denies enforced disappearance or arbitrary detention. The response does not identify his present location, document direct contact with Gao, or provide independently verifiable evidence of his condition.
