VERIFIED FACT: The White House released its official readout of President Donald Trump’s bilateral meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the White House on September 24, 2026, and it contains no mention of political prisoners, detained Americans, religious persecution, or any individual detainee.
According to reporting on the readout, the White House said the two sides discussed ways to “enhance economic cooperation,” expand market access for American business in China, and “increase Chinese investment into our industries.” The readout says both presidents “highlighted the need to build on progress in ending the flow of fentanyl precursors into the United States,” and mentions increased Chinese purchases of American agricultural products. On Iran, the readout says both sides agreed Iran “can never have a nuclear weapon” and that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open. Notably, the readout also omits any reference to Taiwan.
SOURCE CLAIM: The omission comes at the end of a week of advocacy in which organizations, members of Congress, and foreign governments publicly urged Trump to put prisoners on the summit agenda:
- Fortify Rights (September 22) urged Trump to prioritize the release of political and religious prisoners including Jimmy Lai, Joshua Wong, Zion Church pastors, Tara Zhang Yadi, Uyghur scholars Ilham Tohti, Gulshan Abbas, and Ekpar Asat, Wang Bingzhang, Gui Minhai, and Min Zin.
- Ten senators led by Ted Budd and Tim Kaine (September 22) urged Trump to raise the cases of pastors Gao Quanfu and Pang Yu, Light of Zion pastor Tang Bingyi, and eight remaining Zion Church congregants.
- Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (September 23) urged Trump to seek the release of Gulshan Abbas, Jimmy Lai, Gao Quanfu, Pang Yu, and Ekpar Asat, noting that Pastor Jin Mingri was freed after 266 days — a release Durbin credited to Trump’s intervention.
- UK Prime Minister Burnham (September 22, New York) asked Trump to press Xi for Jimmy Lai’s release; Lai, 78, is in rapidly deteriorating health.
- The International Press Institute (September 23) called on Trump to make Lai’s release a summit priority; House Democrats pressed Trump on the same day as Beijing warned rights are “red lines.”
VERIFIED FACT: Reuters reported on September 22 that the White House had assured Yufang Rong, wife of detained American Youlin Chen, that Trump would ask Xi to free Chen and fellow detained American Min Zin at the summit. CBS News later reported that Min Zin is held in a Chinese Ministry of State Security “black site” without charge or a lawyer, with knee pain, weight loss, and months of 4–6-hour interrogations. As of this writing, no public reporting confirms whether Trump raised either American — or any other detained person — in the bilateral meeting itself.
STATUS: UNCONFIRMED — whether prisoners were discussed privately. The evening’s public events named no prisoners. The visit continues through September 26, including a White House tea and National Archives tour on Friday. FreeChina.live will update this Rapid Response if the White House or credible reporting adds names to the record.
Evening Update: Public Remarks Name No Prisoners
SOURCE CLAIM: In their public opening remarks at the White House on September 24, President Trump and President Xi named no political prisoners. Trump spoke of a “truly great friendship” with Xi “built on mutual respect and the vital interests of our people,” according to The Times’ full account; Xi announced that two pandas, Ping-Ping and Fu Shuang, will come to Zoo Atlanta. Xi raised Taiwan only in the leaders’ private Oval Office meeting, according to Chinese state media. The Times reports it remains “unclear how hard Trump would push” on human rights, including the continuing imprisonment of Jimmy Lai and a number of US citizens.
SOURCE CLAIM: As the leaders dined Thursday night, protesters’ chants — “Free Hong Kong,” “Xi Jinping you’re not welcome,” and “freedom for political prisoners” — were audible at the White House, at times drowning out the state dinner, Fox News Digital reported. Tibetan, Uyghur, Hong Kong democracy, Chinese pro-democracy, and Falun Gong groups demonstrated across the day, including a rally at Franklin Park. Separately, IANS reported that anti-Xi demonstrators outside the White House gates called for the release of political prisoners and Jimmy Lai, and that Tibetan organizers said hundreds of protesters were prevented from reaching the Chinese Embassy despite holding permits.

SOURCE CLAIM: On September 24, after the bilateral meeting, Senate Democrats criticized the summit as prioritizing pageantry over substance; in a statement signed by at least 19 of the 47 members of the Democratic caucus and seen by Reuters, they called on Trump to push for human rights and the release of wrongfully detained Americans.
The Free China Movement’s Call
A readout that names fentanyl, agriculture, and investment — but not a single prisoner — is not a complete account of what America stands for. After a week in which Fortify Rights, members of Congress, foreign governments, and press organizations all urged President Trump to put prisoners on the summit agenda, the official record of the bilateral meeting contains none of them.
The Free China Movement calls on President Trump to: (1) publicly name every political prisoner and detained American he raised with Xi Jinping — beginning with detained Americans Youlin Chen and Min Zin, Jimmy Lai, Uyghur prisoners Gulshan Abbas, Ilham Tohti, and Ekpar Asat, pastors Gao Quanfu and Pang Yu, Joshua Wong, journalist Dong Yuyu, citizen journalist Zhang Zhan, Swedish national Gui Minhai, Wang Bingzhang, Tara Zhang Yadi, and the detained Zion Church leaders; (2) demand their unconditional release; and (3) make human rights and prisoner releases a standing, public part of any future engagement with Beijing — not an item that disappears from the record.
What you can do: contact your representatives and urge them to press the administration for a full accounting of what was raised at the summit. Share this page to keep these names visible while the visit continues through September 26.
