Jiang Yanyong was a Chinese military physician at the PLA General Hospital (301 Hospital). In 2003 he became internationally known after challenging the official underreporting of SARS cases. In 2004 he publicly called on China’s leaders to reassess the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown. Contemporary reporting documented detention, political pressure and later restrictions connected to that advocacy.
Death record: Associated Press and the Washington Post report that Jiang died in Beijing on March 11, 2023, at age 91 and report pneumonia. An early Traditional-Chinese CNA report gave March 12; this archive retains the discrepancy and uses March 11 because it is supported by later independent reports. Current evidence does not establish that Jiang was in custody at death or that state action caused his death.
