Bao Tong (1932–2022) was a senior Chinese political-reform official and close aide to Zhao Ziyang. Contemporary and retrospective reporting documents his role in political-reform work before 1989, his arrest in May 1989, prosecution and imprisonment after the crackdown, release in 1996, and later public commentary on political reform, rule of law and the June Fourth legacy. Washington Post reporting from 1992–2001 provides near-contemporaneous prosecution, Qincheng, release and post-release coverage; RFA, RFI/AFP, the Guardian and SCMP add Chinese-language interviews and later chronology.
