Benny Tai Yiu-ting (戴耀廷) is a Hong Kong legal scholar and democracy organizer currently imprisoned in the Hong Kong 47 national-security case.

Background

Tai was a law professor at the University of Hong Kong and a co-founder of the 2014 Occupy Central movement. He later became a leading organizer of the unofficial pro-democracy primary election that formed the basis of the Hong Kong 47 prosecution.

Hong Kong Watch currently lists Tai as in jail. He was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for conspiracy to commit subversion under the National Security Law arising from organization of the July 2020 democratic primary.
