Winnie Yu Wai-ming (余慧明) is a Hong Kong nurse and labor organizer imprisoned in the Hong Kong 47 national-security case.

Background

Yu founded and chaired the Hospital Authority Employees Alliance. She volunteered as a paramedic during major protest movements and helped organize a 2020 health-sector strike calling for stronger border controls during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Hong Kong 47 case

Yu was arrested for participating in the July 2020 unofficial democratic primary election. Hong Kong Watch classifies her as a political prisoner, currently in jail, and records a sentence of 6 years 9 months for conspiracy to commit subversion.

Appeal and current status

Yu’s appeal was rejected by the Court of Appeal on February 23, 2026. On August 10, 2026, she was among 11 Hong Kong 47 defendants granted a certificate/leave pathway to take certified legal questions toward the Court of Final Appeal.
