Xiong Yan was a Peking University student activist during the 1989 democracy movement. Amnesty International named him in contemporaneous post-crackdown arrest documentation. Human Rights Watch later reported that he spent roughly nineteen months in detention in connection with the Tiananmen movement, lost his academic credentials, left China in 1992, and later served as a U.S. Army chaplain.
Evidence note: Qincheng Prison detention is now confirmed by multiple source layers. Xiong Yan stated in a 2009 Radio Free Asia interview that he was taken to Qincheng after his arrest; Human Rights in China independently listed him among Qincheng detainees; and a 1993 Human Rights Watch report said Chen Wei shared a Qincheng cell with him. The exact cell number remains unresolved because participant accounts conflict between Cell 5 and Cell 6. Contemporary arrest sources also differ on the exact June 1989 arrest date and location. RFA later quoted Xiong recalling that he left Qincheng on January 24, 1991; an official prison release record has not yet been acquired.
