Zheng Xuguang was a Beihang student activist during the 1989 democracy movement. Contemporaneous reporting identified him as No. 9 on the post-crackdown wanted list. He was arrested in Guangzhou in 1989 after an attempted escape, tried in 1990, sentenced to two years in prison in 1991, and released after completing the sentence.
Later reporting and human-rights records document renewed detention connected to Peace Charter and other democracy activity in 1993–1995. Later participant and institutional sources connect him to Beihang student autonomy, the Beijing Students Autonomous Federation, dialogue delegations and a Tiananmen temporary-command structure, but exact titles, dates and authority remain under primary-source verification.
A 1994 UPI report attributed to friends a claim that he was treated well during detention; Zheng’s 2026 direct clarification describes beatings and prolonged restraint.
