Historical classification: lawyer and former journalist imprisoned in 2001 for distributing Internet materials including copies of VIP Reference (大参考). This historical sentence is not treated as evidence of current imprisonment.
Zhu Ruixiang (朱瑞祥) was a lawyer in Shaoyang, Hunan, and had previously worked in local broadcasting and journalism. Contemporary press-freedom and human-rights sources report that he was arrested in May 2001 after forwarding material by e-mail, including copies of VIP Reference / Dacankao, to friends.
2001 prosecution
The Committee to Protect Journalists reported that Zhu was tried on September 10, 2001 and sentenced on September 11 to three years in prison after the local Political and Legal Committee pushed for a harsher sentence than the court had initially indicated. Human Rights Watch and the U.S. Department of State independently documented the three-year sentence for Internet distribution of materials deemed politically hostile.
A later historical compilation states that VIP Reference reported Zhu was released before completion of the term; P1 has not yet recovered the original release notice or exact release date. His present-day location and status are therefore not asserted without fresh evidence.
VIP Reference evidence
A preserved Google Groups copy of VIP Reference issue 1283, dated August 5, 2001, carries a headline concerning Zhu Ruixiang being sentenced for disseminating 大参考. The preserved posting is treated as a historical carrier copy; recovery of the original bignews.org file/header remains a source-recovery target.
