This archive preserves the source record for Arslan Abdullah (阿尔斯兰·阿布都拉), a Uyghur philology professor at Xinjiang University detained in early 2018. Entries are ordered chronologically; limitations and conflicts are recorded at the end.
Source chronology
- September 2018 — Radio Free Asia (Uyghur and English services). RFA’s Uyghur service reported on detained Uyghur intellectuals, citing Qutluq Almas, a colleague of Abdullah, who said Abdullah had been taken to a political re-education camp “seven or eight months” earlier — placing the detention around February 2018. RFA’s English service (September 18, 2018) carried the same account. In a separate September 2018 report, RFA cited Xinjiang University staff confirming Abdullah’s detention and that he had not worked at the university for some time.
- 2018 — Uyghur Human Rights Project, “Disappeared Forever.” UHRP’s documentation of disappeared Uyghur academics lists “Arslan Abdulla” as a language professor at Xinjiang University, in his 70s, reported as held in an internment camp, alongside colleagues Abdukerim Rahman, Azat Sultan and Gheyretjan Osman.
- 2019 — List of Uyghur intellectuals imprisoned in China (2016–present). Entry 27: “Arslan Abdulla, (M) Former dean, Philology Institute, Xinjiang University; Professor; Head of XUAR People’s Government Cultural Advisors’ Office.”
- 2019 — Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) motion. A ULB motion on endangered Uyghur scholars lists “Arislan Abdulla” among Xinjiang University scholars disappeared or imprisoned.
- 2019 — U.S. Department of State, Report on International Religious Freedom (Xinjiang). Listed “language professor Arslan Abdulla” among prominent Uyghurs who “remained in detention or whose whereabouts were unknown as of year’s end.”
- July 2020 — Uyghur Hjelp, “Detained & imprisoned scholars,” entry 223. Records: name Arslan Abdulla; Chinese name 阿尔斯兰·阿布都拉; born 1946; professor and dean, philology department, Xinjiang University, Ürümqi; head of the XUAR People’s Government Cultural Advisors’ Office. Testimonies: colleague Qutluq Almas via RFA Uyghur (detained ~Feb 2018, held at a political re-education camp); former student Abduweli Ayup (detained-intellectuals list); Xinjiang University staff via RFA Uyghur (detention confirmed). Notes a three-volume Uyghur-language collection he chief-edited.
- December 2021 — UHRP briefing, “The Disappearance of Uyghur Intellectual and Cultural Elites.” Repeats the account of Abdullah and fellow Xinjiang University scholars held in internment camps; cites RFA reporting.
- 2023 — Xinjiang Victims Database, entry 223 (via The Asian Observer). Database read records: Arslan Abdulla (阿尔斯兰·阿布都拉), male, Uyghur, age 76–77, occupation university professor, sentence 18 years.
- 2024 — Nabamart article on Gao Bo. In a February 2024 piece, the site claims Professor Arslan Abdulla was “kidnapped” in late 2018. This conflicts with the February 2018 detention timeline reported by RFA and the scholars’ database; see Conflicts.
- 2025 — Uygur News, “Germany-Educated Academic Nebijan Habibulla Remains Unlawfully Imprisoned.” Reports that Nebijan Habibulla “was a student of jailed academic Arslan Abdullah and was detained at the same time as two of Arslan’s other PhD students” in February 2018.
- August 2026 — Rights Defense Network, Issue 131 monthly report. Bare-name index entry “Arslan Abdullah” in the 1,638-person current-custody roster (English index). No bio attached.
Conflicts and evidentiary limitations
- Detention date conflict (UNRESOLVED): RFA and Uyghur Hjelp place the detention circa February 2018; a 2024 Nabamart article says Abdullah was “kidnapped” in late 2018. The Nabamart claim may refer to a later transfer or may be an imprecise retelling; it is not independently corroborated and is not published here as fact.
- 18-year sentence (single-database claim): rests on the Xinjiang Victims Database entry 223 as quoted in The Asian Observer. No court, charge, or verdict document is publicly available. Kept source-attributed; not stated as officially confirmed.
- Detention reason: unknown. UHRP notes his scholarship had no apparent religious or political content; no official charge has been reported.
- Current status: no confirmed information beyond the database entries; no claims are made here about his present condition or location.
- RFA originals: the two 2018 RFA reports were cited via the Uyghur Hjelp project’s quotation; both remain flagged for direct verification.
