Chang Zheng / 常铮 — Media Profile & Archive

This archive preserves the source reporting, documents and evidence chronology behind the Chang Zheng person profile. It records what each source says, what remains unverified, and where sources conflict, so that readers can see how the facts in the profile were established.

Case summary

Chang Zheng (常铮), a Falun Gong practitioner from Hushuguan, Suzhou, Jiangsu, born July 19, 1972, was detained repeatedly between 2001 and 2016 for her practice. On May 10, 2021, she was seized in a coordinated mass arrest of thirteen Suzhou practitioners and was subsequently sentenced to four years and six months in prison with a 4,000-yuan fine, according to Minghui reporting cited by the CHRD prisoner database. That database records her release home on February 5, 2026. The August 2026 Issue 131 roster still lists her as in custody — the discrepancy is documented below.

Source grading and provenance

  • CHRD Prisoners of Conscience Database (source 1): established, long-running prisoner database; structured record with cited sources. Graded PROBABLE for identity, detention date, sentence figure and release date. Note the release claim rests on a single lineage (Minghui summary → CHRD record), which is why the conflict below is recorded rather than resolved silently.
  • Minghui (sources 2–4): Falun Gong-affiliated reporting network; the only detailed narrative source for this case. Graded PROBABLE for dated detention events (internally consistent across the library page and CHRD record); PROBABLE but single-lineage for the sentence length and the February 2026 release.
  • Rights Defense Network Issue 131 (source 5): activist-compiled roster; graded PROBABLE for the fact that Chang Zheng was carried on the in-custody list as of August 31, 2026 — which is precisely what creates the conflict below.

Conflict

  • SOURCE A: CHRD prisoner database, record poc_c_00446, updated 2026-06-11: 常铮 / CHANG ZHENG, status “Released,” release date 2026.2.5, citing Minghui’s February 17, 2026 mainland-news summary.
  • SOURCE B: Rights Defense Network Issue 131, August 31, 2026 (later than Source A’s update): “Chang Zheng” listed in the “sentences unknown, 25 people” group of the 1,638 people reported as currently detained.
  • CONFLICT: Source A says she was released in February 2026; Source B, issued nearly six months later, still counts her as currently in custody.
  • BEST AVAILABLE INTERPRETATION: The Issue 131 roster entry is most likely stale — Weiquanwang’s roster updates lag behind individual status changes, and its sentence data for her was never filled in (hence the “sentences unknown” placement). However, re-detention after a February release cannot be excluded on the evidence available.
  • CONFIDENCE: MODERATE for the release fact (single-source lineage: Minghui summary → CHRD record; release date plausible against a mid-2021 sentence start). The conflict is genuine and must travel with the profile.
  • WHAT WOULD RESOLVE IT: Issue 132+ of the Weiquanwang monthly report (does Chang Zheng remain listed?); a family statement; an updated Minghui report; direct verification before any public custody claim.

Claims that must remain source-attributed (never published as bare fact)

Claims that must NOT be published

  • Do not assert she is currently free or currently detained — status is unresolved as documented above.

  • Do not merge with Peng Changzheng (彭长征) or any other Chang-surname detainee.
