Chen Gang / 陈钢 — Media Profile & Archive

This archive accompanies the canonical profile of Chen Gang / 陈钢, a worker at the Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory in Hunan who was punished in connection with the June 1989 factory protest case.

Documented record

Human Rights in China documented in Anthems of Defeat: Crackdown in Hunan Province, 1989–92 that Chen Gang, then 25, worked at the Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory and that his family lived in the factory’s Liberation Village. After a protester was beaten by factory public-security personnel on or about June 9, 1989, Chen Gang led more than twenty protesters to the factory’s public-security office to demand an explanation; finding no one there, the group went to the home of Fang Fuqiu, the factory’s public-security supervisor, where furnishings were burned and destroyed.

The same documentation records that the authorities repeatedly changed the legal characterization of his conduct: from counterrevolutionary propaganda and incitement, to assembling a mob for beating, smashing and looting, and finally to hooliganism — the charge on which he was convicted. The Xiangtan City Intermediate People’s Court sentenced him to death at first instance; in May 1990 the sentence was changed to death with a two-year reprieve. He was sent to Longxi Prison (Hunan Provincial No. 6 Prison), together with fellow worker Peng Shi.

The Dui Hua Foundation’s 2009 reporting on the case confirmed the death-with-reprieve sentence and noted that sentences in the group were reduced over time. The same reporting described a release of Chen Gang and Peng Shi in 2004 following sentence reductions; this account rests on a single source and is graded probable, not verified.

Chen Ding, a student at the Changsha Railway Academy, was Chen Gang’s younger brother. He was sentenced separately — to one year for counterrevolutionary propaganda and incitement — and was not a co-defendant in the workers’ hooliganism trial.

Name and identity caution

The Chinese-character form is not fully settled. Chinese secondary sources attest 陈钢; the Dui Hua Foundation’s reporting renders the name 陈刚. Both forms are carried here; they are not treated as two different people.

Status caution

No independent, reliable release or post-release record for Chen Gang has been located beyond the single-source 2004 account described above. His current status is recorded as not verified.
