Chen Suyuan (陈素媛) is a Falun Gong practitioner from Anshan, Liaoning Province, born in 1948, reported to be serving a three-year prison sentence imposed in 2026.
According to the Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) Prisoners of Conscience database, Chen has been detained multiple times:
- On October 25, 2012, she and her husband were seized by plainclothes police near the Tiedong District Court in Anshan while on their way to a supermarket; their home was raided. She was later released. Her husband died suddenly on November 27, 2012 — the CHRD record attributes the death to the shock and fear caused by the incident.
- On April 15, 2020, she was detained by the Lingshan police station in Anshan and held at the Anshan women’s detention center. In August 2020, the Lishan District Court tried her case and sentenced her to one and a half years.
- On January 20, 2026, she was seized by officers of the Shuangshan police station acting on the orders of the domestic security brigade of the Lishan Public Security sub-bureau, and was then held at the Anshan City No. 1 Women’s Detention Center. On April 22, 2026, the Anshan Lishan Court tried her case. She was subsequently sentenced to three years; the charge is unknown, and her term runs to January 19, 2029.
The Rights Defense Network (维权网) monthly report on political prisoners and prisoners of conscience in custody in mainland China, Issue 131 (August 31, 2026), lists Chen Suyuan among the 110 people reported as sentenced to three years.
As of the latest dated reports (July and August 2026), Chen Suyuan is serving her three-year sentence at the Anshan City No. 1 Women’s Detention Center.
Note: she is not the film makeup artist Chen Suyuan (陈溯源), whose name uses different Chinese characters — a different person, excluded from this profile.
