Deng Hongcheng (邓洪成) is a rights activist from Hunan serving a 12-year prison sentence for subversion (颠覆国家政权罪). He was swept up in what became known as the “Shenzhen Crackdown” — disappearances and detentions beginning in November 2016 of people who had gathered for a dinner in Shenzhen to discuss politics and current affairs. On January 13, 2020, the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court sentenced him to 12 years’ imprisonment, the longest term imposed on anyone convicted in that case cluster. He appears in the Rights Defense Network (维权网) monthly report of August 31, 2026 (Issue 131) among 1,638 reported current political prisoners and prisoners of conscience in mainland China.
Born in the 1960s and originally from Hunan, Deng had formerly worked as a trader in Hainan before moving to Shenzhen in 2014, according to the rights organization Chinese Human Rights Defenders. He disappeared on November 15, 2016, at Bantian Yangmei Village in Shenzhen; his relatives in Jiangxi were questioned by police on December 6, and his family received a notice on December 20 that he was held under residential surveillance at a designated location on suspicion of subversion. He remained in custody for more than three years before the January 2020 sentencing.
The Dui Hua Foundation, reporting information from its government interlocutors, stated in December 2020 that Deng was still in prison serving his 12-year term, and later learned that his expected release falls in early 2029. No court judgment, appeal record, or detention-facility record for Deng has been located in public sources; no fact is asserted here beyond what the dated sources below document.
