Profile status
Present classification: Former / released · Region: Mainland China

Deng Huanwu (邓焕武) is a veteran democracy activist associated with Chongqing and Sichuan and with China Democracy Party organizing in the late 1990s.

Detention and trial history

  • May 1995: Deng was detained without a warrant on 18 May 1995 by Chongqing Public Security officers during the pre-4 June crackdown, according to Amnesty International. He had signed a petition calling on the Chinese authorities to guarantee human rights. Human Rights Watch identified him as a Sichuan native who had previously served a ten-year prison sentence for dissident political thought; after going missing on 18 or 19 May, he was reportedly sent back to Sichuan and warned not to leave home.
  • September 1995: Amnesty International reported that Deng had been formally charged and tried, reportedly for “bigamy,” on 2 or 3 September 1995. The sentence was not announced. Amnesty considered him a prisoner of conscience.
  • 1998: Deng was among the Chongqing signatories of a 16 July 1998 open letter from dissidents in nineteen provinces and municipalities concerning the crackdown on the China Democracy Party. In November 1998 he was among six dissidents briefly detained by Chongqing Public Security officers for attempts to organize a China Democracy Party branch in Sichuan, according to Human Rights Watch.
  • Later sighting: In a first-person essay published on China Change in March 2015, Chen Mingxian recalled that Deng came from Chongqing several times to visit the family around 2000–2002 and lent money to help furnish their apartment.
