Dong Daoqun (董道群) — Chongqing Falun Gong Practitioner Sentenced to Five Years

Dong Daoqun (董道群, also rendered Dong Daoquan) is a Falun Gong practitioner in her 70s from Banan District, Chongqing, and a retired worker of the Banan Dajiang Factory (formerly the Qingjiang Machinery Factory). She was detained by police in January 2024 after speaking with people about Falun Gong, and in January 2025 it was reported that she had been sentenced to five years in prison, with her term running to January 2029.

A decades-long record of detention

Dong’s case is part of a longer history. According to reports documenting her case:

  • On December 31, 1999, she was detained while doing Falun Gong exercises in public and held at a detention center, where she was pressured to sign statements renouncing the practice.
  • In March 2000, she traveled to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong and was detained, then escorted back to Chongqing and given one year of forced labor.
  • After her release in 2001 she was detained again and given a further three-year forced-labor term.
  • On July 19, 2008, police from the Lianshi Police Station took her to the Shengdengshan Brainwashing Center; about a month later she was transferred to the Chongqing Women’s Forced Labor Camp, where she remained until February 26, 2010.
  • On May 12, 2017, she was detained in Qijiang District, Chongqing, subsequently sentenced to two years, and held in the Chongqing Women’s Prison (2017–2019).

Reports describe severe mistreatment during her 2017–2019 imprisonment, including prolonged standing, sleep deprivation, and denial of water for washing. These accounts come from Falun Gong-affiliated reporting and have not been independently verified.

The 2024 detention and five-year sentence

In January 2024, Dong was again detained by police and her home was searched after she spoke to people about Falun Gong. In mid-January 2025, reporting indicated that a court had sentenced her to five years in prison. The indictment, trial, and sentencing proceedings were not publicly documented, and her detention facility has not been publicly confirmed. The CHRD prisoner database records the charge as unknown, the sentence as five years, and the term as running to January 2029.

Status

As of the January 2025 reports, Dong was serving a five-year prison term ending January 2029. Her current whereabouts and detention facility are not publicly confirmed. Nothing in the available records indicates a release.
