Du Jingyi (杜景义) — Media Profile & Archive

Media Profile & Archive — Du Jingyi (杜景义). This archive preserves the source basis, identification, and evidentiary limits behind the Person profile for Du Jingyi (杜景义): a lawyer in his sixties from Changchun City, Jilin Province, sentenced to seven years in prison around May 2021 for practicing Falun Gong.

Identification

The Chinese characters 杜景义 are established by multi-anchor evidence, not by transliteration guesswork. The July 31, 2018 Minghui Chinese article on Cui Yuqiu — whose biography (Jilin University library worker, Falun Gong since March 1996, Heizuizi Women’s Forced Labor Camp terms of one year in 2002 and one and a half years in 2003, mother’s death during the second term, daughter’s academic decline) matches the English 2021 reporting’s “Cui Yuqiu” anchor for anchor — names her husband as 丈夫杜景义, and its account of the June 2017 detention names the detained couple as 杜景义 and 崔玉秋夫妇. City (Changchun), occupation (lawyer), arrest date, wife, daughter, hearings, and sentence in the English reporting all attach to this same couple. A 2005 Qinglong County, Hebei case involving the same characters 杜景义 concerns a different person and is not merged here.

Source chronology

  • June 1, 2017 — outdoor-exercise detention. Cui Yuqiu, her husband Du Jingyi (杜景义), and seven other practitioners are detained for practicing Falun Gong exercises outside the Jilin University north campus. Both spouses receive fifteen days of detention (Weizigou Detention Center) despite blood-pressure readings above the intake limit. (Minghui Chinese, July 31, 2018.)
  • September 9, 2019 — arrest. Du is arrested at about 6 a.m. while buying groceries; officers take his keys and search the home. His wife Cui Yuqiu and daughter Du Xin are also detained and released around 11 p.m. that day. Du is held overnight at the Yihelu Police Station and transferred to the Changchun City No. 2 Detention Center the next day. Minghui reports he is later hospitalized after developing scabies in his cell. (Minghui English, May 9, 2021.)
  • July 13, 2020 — first hearing by the Chaoyang District Court. Two days later, police detain Du’s wife and daughter again; the daughter is released after thirteen days, while Cui remains at the Changchun City No. 4 Detention Center. (Minghui English, May 9, 2021; Falun Dafa Information Center aggregate.)
  • September 28, 2020 — second hearing. Presiding judge Zhang Dan bars Du’s daughter from attending because she is listed as a prosecution witness, and refuses entry to a relative the daughter had gone to find. (Minghui English, May 9, 2021; Falun Dafa Information Center aggregate.)
  • December 10–11, 2020 — wife’s hearing. The family receives notice on December 10 that Cui Yuqiu is to appear before the Chaoyang District Court the next day; the family is barred from attending because, the judge says, the case is “very special.” No verdict for Cui has been reported. (Minghui English, May 9, 2021.)
  • Around early May 2021 — sentencing. Du is sentenced to seven years; his family is not informed of the verdict. He appeals to the Changchun City Intermediate Court, which upholds the sentence. The May 2021 report states it is not clear whether he has been taken to a prison. (Minghui English, May 9, 2021; Falun Dafa Information Center aggregate, June 2021.)
  • Wife’s earlier history (source-attributed). Cui Yuqiu, 68 in 2021 (65 in the 2018 article), worked at the Jilin University library and took up Falun Gong in March 1996; the practice is credited in her account with improving her heart condition, rhinitis, and kidney problems. She was detained in January 2002 for four days, detained again in March 2002 during the post-TV-insertion sweep and sent to the Heizuizi Women’s Forced Labor Camp for one year, and detained in November 2003 and sent back to Heizuizi for one and a half years, where the articles report beatings, electric shocks, sleep deprivation, and forced labor. Her mother, in her nineties, died during the second term; her daughter’s school performance fell sharply afterward. (Minghui Chinese, July 31, 2018; Minghui English, May 9, 2021.)
