Duan Ping / 段平 — Media Profile & Archive

Media Profile & Archive

This archive accompanies the canonical profile of Duan Ping / 段平, a teacher from the Yongzhou/Qiyang area of Hunan documented in human-rights reporting on administrative detention.

Documented record

Human Rights Watch/Asia Watch reported that Duan was 32 and had taught at Qiyang No. 1 Middle School. The report states that during the 1989 democracy movement authorities accused him of making “secret link-ups” and stirring up disturbances, after which he received two years of re-education through labor.

The same source says he was released by 1992 and opened an electronic-game parlor; that release report remains source-attributed rather than independently verified. HRW further reported that after the failed August 1991 Soviet coup, Duan was arrested again, apparently over statements welcoming the coup’s failure, and was sent to Xinkaipu Labor Re-education Center for an additional three years of re-education through labor.

Later CHRD and Hunan compilation records generally preserve only the first two-year term. The second three-year term is therefore retained as a single-source HRW report and is not combined into a single five-year sentence. Both measures were administrative detention, not criminal-court sentences.

Evidence limits

Current status: unknown. No reliable post-second-detention history has been established in the sources reviewed.
