2024 detention and reported sentence

According to Minghui and reports reproducing information from Weiquanwang, police from the Henan and Tiebei police stations arrested Gai, his wife Wang Xiujuan, their son, and daughter-in-law on July 19, 2024. His relatives were subsequently released, while Gai remained in custody at the Meihekou City Detention Center.

In May 2026, rights-monitoring sources reported that Gai had been sentenced to seven years and nine months in prison and fined 30,000 yuan. The reports said he had been transferred to the Ninth Division of Jilin Province Prison and that an appeal was unsuccessful. Weiquanwang-derived reporting gives an expected sentence end date of April 18, 2032.

Reported treatment in custody

Minghui reported that Gai began a hunger strike after his detention and alleged that he was subjected to mistreatment severe enough to impair his ability to walk. These treatment allegations have not been independently verified by Free China Movement and are presented as attributed claims.

Earlier history

Rights-monitoring accounts state that Gai had previously been detained and subjected to a labor-camp term after the mainland authorities began their campaign against Falun Gong in 1999. The presently available evidence does not establish every date and disposition in that earlier history with the same precision as the 2024–2026 case.

Current status

The July 31, 2026 mainland political-prisoner roster lists Gai Yongguang among people reported detained. On the evidence presently available, his reported imprisonment at Jilin Province Prison is the most recent documented status. Free China Movement does not infer developments beyond the latest sourced record.
