Hu Yang / 胡洋

Hu Yang (胡洋) is a student from Zhengzhou, Henan Province who completed a master’s degree at Leiden University in 2025 after earlier study at Wuhan University. Rights-defense reporting states that he was detained after returning to China in July 2025.

Detention and proceedings

Rights Defense Network reports that Hu arrived at Shanghai Pudong airport on July 26, 2025 with fellow student Wu Haoyu and was intercepted by police. The outlet reports that Hu was later held at the Zhengzhou No. 3 Detention Center and formally arrested on September 3, 2025 on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” Family members were reportedly told the case concerned speech and was being handled as politically sensitive.

Rights Defense Network reported that Hu’s lawyer was able to meet him on November 9, 2025 after an extended period without access. In July 2026, the outlet reported that the Erqi District People’s Court had tried the case but had not announced a verdict.

Status and evidence limits

Issue 131, dated August 31, 2026, lists Hu among reported detained-awaiting-trial cases in Henan. No official judgment or later verdict was located. The specific speech or conduct underlying the charge is not established, and Hu is not characterized here as a dissident or activist.
