The Poetry Foundation’s 2006 profile “Writing on the Wall” documents his Democracy Wall participation, his association with the Enlightenment (启蒙) journal, multiple imprisonment episodes, and U.S. exile. The Laogai Research Foundation’s prisoner biography provides an arrest-and-custody episode chronology spanning 1959 through 1994, including the 1978 Enlightenment Society and a 1987 arrest. Radio Free Asia reported in 2004 that he had spent more than ten years in prison for refusing Party controls.
Custody dates and legal outcomes are stated only as the sources report them; this archive does not infer dates, charges, or outcomes beyond the verified record. Unrelated individuals who share the name 黄翔 are separate records and are not included in this archive.
This archive will incorporate further primary documents, contemporaneous reporting, interviews, photographs, and organizational records as they are verified. Primary judgments and official case records remain an enrichment gap.
