Media Profile & Archive
This archive accompanies the canonical profile of Jiang Fengshan, a philosophy teacher at Xiangtan University documented by Human Rights Watch/Asia Watch in reporting on the 1989 democracy movement and its aftermath.
Documented record
Human Rights Watch/Asia Watch reported that Jiang was 37 at the time of the crackdown. According to the report, he gave public speeches during the 1989 democracy movement and supported the students. After June 4, authorities accused him of encouraging workers to strike and block traffic. These are official characterizations reported by the source, not court findings.
Jiang was reportedly arrested in July 1989 and held in Xiangtan City Jail. In early 1990, the Xiangtan City Public Security Bureau imposed three years of re-education through labor. This was administrative detention rather than a criminal-court sentence.
Evidence limits
Current status: unknown. No reliable release or post-detention record has been established in the sources reviewed. The nominal term should not be treated as proof of actual release.
