Li Fengying (李凤英)

Li Fengying (李凤英), a resident of Wulian County, Rizhao City, Shandong Province, was a Falun Gong practitioner who was reported dead on December 31, 2024, four months after being released from prison in critical condition, according to reports by Minghui.org, a Falun Gong-affiliated news outlet.

Li was arrested on October 10, 2022, after being reported by a fruit vendor for talking to him about Falun Gong, which she had taken up in 2011. Police ransacked her home and confiscated her Falun Gong books, informational materials, laptop, and printer. Later the same day, police also arrested fellow practitioners Zheng Yunmei, Wang Hongwu, Wang Shihua, and Yang Mingzhen. All five were interrogated and taken to the Rizhao City Detention Center.

The Wulian County Court held joint hearings of the five practitioners’ cases on April 28 and May 8, 2023. Two lawyers entered not-guilty pleas and objected that the police had raided the practitioners’ homes without proper search warrants, had not verified the confiscated items with their clients, and had intimidated some practitioners during interrogation. On May 15, 2023, the court convicted all five: Li received the heaviest term, eight years in prison with a 20,000-yuan fine. The others received four and a half years (Wang Hongwu), four years each (Yang Mingzhen, Zheng Yunmei), and one and a half years (Wang Shihua).

Despite her frail health after nearly ten months in the Rizhao City Detention Center, Li was transferred to the Shandong Province Women’s Prison in Jinan on August 8, 2023. Days later she was rushed to the Qilu Hospital of Shandong University and was diagnosed with lymphoma and uterine cancer. Minghui reported that her request for medical parole was denied and that the prison hospital administered chemotherapy despite her and her family’s refusal. As her condition worsened, the prison released her on parole on August 23, 2024; she died at home around 4 a.m. on December 31, 2024.
