Li Yu / 李煜 — Hengyang Student Sentenced After 1989

Li Yu (李煜) was born in 1969 in Hengyang, Hunan, and was a university student during the 1989 democracy movement. Human-rights documentation records that he received a one-year prison sentence for “counter-revolutionary propaganda and incitement.”

Documented record

The available HRIC/HRW-Asia Hunan roster lineage, later reproduced by Chinese Human Rights Defenders, identifies Li Yu as born in Hengyang in 1969, a university student, and sentenced to one year in prison on the charge of counter-revolutionary propaganda and incitement.

The surviving public record does not establish his university, specific protest acts, arrest date, sentencing court, prison, release date, or later life. Free China therefore does not infer any of those facts from the nominal sentence.

Identity note

This Li Yu is distinct from Li Yumin (李郁民), a defendant in the separate 1990 Chenzhou case. He is also unrelated to the historical Southern Tang ruler Li Yu (李煜, 937–978) and to Hong Kong activist Andy Li Yu-hin (李宇軒).

Evidence status

Current status: unknown. Evidence limitation: the core facts currently rest on one human-rights documentation lineage rather than a recovered judgment. Additional court, detention, release, and biographical records remain research pending.
