Li Yumin / 李郁民 — Media Profile & Archive

This archive accompanies the canonical profile of Li Yumin / 李郁民, one of five defendants in the 1990 Chenzhou case concerning the organization described in the court judgment as the “Democratic China Front — Mountain Branch” (民主中国阵线山地支部).

Documented record

The surviving criminal judgment — Hunan Chenzhou Prefecture Intermediate People’s Court, Criminal Trial Division No. 1, case (1990) 郴一初字第88号, issued November 7, 1990 — convicted the five defendants of the crime of forming a counterrevolutionary clique (反革命集团罪). The judgment describes the group as drafting a program, assigning roles, recruiting members, creating an emblem, collecting dues, and distributing political leaflets.

Li Yumin was treated as a subordinate participant (从犯): the court found he actively took part in the group’s activities and offered advice (“积极参加该反革命集团的活动,出谋划策”), and applied discretionary leniency in light of his good confession after detention. He received one year of imprisonment, calculated from March 4, 1990 through March 3, 1991, plus one year of deprivation of political rights — the lightest sentence among the five defendants.

The judgment places Li Yumin among those who distributed leaflets at the Zixing Mining Bureau and four subordinate coal mines on the nights of January 14 and 17, 1990, together with Bai Xiaomao, Xiong Rentao and Chen Jianlong. Xiong and Chen were named participants, not defendants in this judgment.

Only pages 4 and 5 of the judgment carry Li Yumin’s verdict facts; pages 2 and 3 — expected to contain his personal details — have not been recovered. The surviving photographs come from a family-held copy published with a 2023 WRIC report.

Identity caution

Li Yumin’s age, occupation, and hometown are unrecovered (they lie on the missing pages 2–3) and must not be inferred from the name. He is distinct from the Hengyang student Li Yu (李煜) in a separate 1989-related case, and from the earlier historical figure Li Yuting (李郁廷, 1906–1977) — neither should be merged with him.

Status caution

No prison assignment, release record, or post-sentence biography has been located. The nominal sentence end date must not be treated as evidence of release. Current status is not verified.
