Liu Gang / 刘刚 — Media Profile & Archive

Liu Gang (刘刚) was a student organizer in the 1989 democracy movement in China. Amnesty International identified him as a key 1989 student organizer and prisoner of conscience, reporting his arrest in June 1989 and his six-year sentence handed down in February 1991 for subversion related to his organizing role.

The documentary record on Liu Gang’s imprisonment and release is unusually complete for a 1989 case. His trial and sentencing were reported contemporaneously by the Washington Post in February 1991. Amnesty International’s 1993 prisoner appeal records his transfer to Lingyuan No. 2 Prison in April 1991. He was released in mid-June 1995 after serving the full six-year term, with post-release restrictions reported by the Associated Press. Three months later, the South China Morning Post reported a separate 15-day administrative detention in September 1995 — distinct from the completed criminal sentence. In 1996 he escaped China and was admitted to the United States, a sequence confirmed by the Washington Post in May 1996 and reviewed by Human Rights Watch in a 2004 retrospective.

The record has clear boundaries. Amnesty’s account of ill-treatment during detention rests on Amnesty’s own reporting and Liu’s own account. The sources do not establish what happened after his arrival in the United States in 1996, and this profile does not claim to. Where the sources disagree or are silent, the archive preserves the uncertainty rather than resolving it.

This media archive currently holds six source-controlled records spanning 1991–2004: the Amnesty International prisoner appeal (1993), contemporaneous Washington Post and Associated Press reporting on his trial (1991), release (1995), and escape to the United States (1996), the South China Morning Post report on his September 1995 administrative detention, and the Human Rights Watch retrospective (2004). Contemporaneous Chinese-language sources, primary legal documents, photographs, and post-1996 records will be added only as they are verified.
