Liu Jian / 刘建 — Media Profile & Archive

This archive accompanies the canonical profile of Liu Jian / 刘建, a Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory worker documented in connection with the 1989 Hunan crackdown.

Case record

Human Rights in China’s Hunan documentation identifies Liu Jian as a worker at the Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory, about 26 years old in 1989. The Dui Hua Foundation identifies him among four Xiangtan factory workers convicted on the now-abolished charge of hooliganism and reports that Liu Jian received a life sentence.

Dui Hua has reported that sentences imposed on members of this group were reduced over time. The available evidence reviewed for Liu Jian, however, does not establish a reliable individual release record.

Evidence limits

The record does not establish Liu Jian’s individual court or prison with sufficient confidence. Those details are therefore not inferred from co-defendants. Likewise, a reduced sentence or nominal sentence trajectory is not treated as evidence of release. Current status remains unknown.

Related people

Chen Gang, Peng Shi and Liu Zhihua were fellow Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory workers associated with the same 1989 incident. Chen Ding was prosecuted separately and is not merged into the workers’ hooliganism case.
