Profile
Liu Jianwei / 刘建伟 was a worker in the Vehicle Section of the Passenger Transport Department of the Changsha Railway Bureau and a participant in the Changsha Workers’ Autonomous Federation during the 1989 democracy movement in Hunan.
1989 activity and detention
According to Asia Watch’s 1992 report Anthems of Defeat: Crackdown in Hunan Province, 1989–92, Liu was 30 years old and took part in the Changsha Workers’ Autonomous Federation. The report states that in mid-June 1989 he secretly helped several leaders of the provincial Students’ Autonomous Federation leave Changsha by train.
Asia Watch reported that Liu was arrested in September 1989. In early 1990, the Changsha Railway Public Security Bureau imposed three years of re-education through labor. This was administrative detention rather than a criminal prison sentence or court conviction. The report placed him at the Changsha Xinkaipu Labor Re-education Center.
Status and evidence limits
Current status: unknown. No reliable release record or post-detention biography has been established in the evidence reviewed for this profile. A nominal three-year term must not be converted into an inferred release date.
This Liu Jianwei must not be merged with other people named Liu Wei in Hunan 1989 records. The identity anchor here is the Changsha Railway Bureau worker, age 30, linked to the Workers’ Autonomous Federation and the June 1989 railway assistance to student leaders.
