Liu Jianxin (刘建新)

Liu Jianxin (刘建新) is a petitioner from Cangshan District, Fuzhou City, Fujian Province. The Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) prisoner database reports that he began petitioning after his home was demolished and he went for years without what he considered adequate compensation or resettlement.

According to the CHRD database, Liu was intercepted in Beijing in 2020 and criminally detained on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” (寻衅滋事). He was later released, while efforts to resolve the demolition dispute reportedly failed.

On September 12, 2021, CHRD reports, Liu held a placard bearing the character “冤” (“injustice”) near Yongdingmen in Beijing and attempted to take his own life. He was rescued and taken into police custody. On September 17, 2021, his family received notice that he had been placed in the Fuzhou No. 2 Detention Center.

The CHRD database states that on September 30, 2021 the Cangshan District Procuratorate approved Liu’s arrest on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” A closed court proceeding was held on January 19, 2022, during which prosecutors recommended a four-year sentence. No verdict has been publicly reported in the sources reviewed.

Rights Defense Network Issue 131, dated August 31, 2026, lists 刘建新 in its Fujian group of people classified as detained without a reported sentence.

Status: listed as detained without a reported sentence as of August 31, 2026. No verdict, sentence, release, current facility, or post-2022 circumstances are inferred beyond the dated roster listing.
