Present classification: Former / released · Region: Mainland China
Liu Qing / 刘青 is a veteran Chinese democracy activist associated with the Democracy Wall movement, the unofficial journal April Fifth Forum (四五论坛), and later human-rights advocacy.
Profile
Contemporaneous and retrospective controlled sources identify Liu as a co-founder/editor of April Fifth Forum and as chair of a 1979 joint conference of unofficial-magazine editors. He later spent many years in custody and imprisonment. Source accounts vary on portions of the sentence chronology, so this profile preserves those differences rather than normalizing them without the original legal instruments.
Liu arrived in the United States in 1992 and later served as chairman of Human Rights in China. His work spans independent publishing, democracy advocacy, prisoner-rights documentation and international human-rights advocacy.
Evidence and open questions
The controlled FCM baseline includes contemporaneous press, Amnesty International, Washington Post, Index on Censorship, Human Rights Watch, China Spring/Beijing Spring, C-SPAN, academic oral-history material and Dui Hua. Primary reeducation-through-labor, judgment, prison-transfer and release records remain open research targets.
