Liu Shizun / 刘世遵 — China Democracy Party Organizer and Former Political Prisoner

Identity and classification

Liu Shizun (刘世遵), born in 1962 according to Human Rights Watch’s CDP prisoner database, is a Liaoning-based democracy activist associated with the China Democracy Party (CDP). Contemporary reporting identified him as chairman of the CDP’s Dalian branch and secretary-general of the Beijing–Tianjin branch. He is a former political prisoner. Current status beyond the completion of the historical six-year sentence requires additional fresh-source verification.

Biography and organizations

Radio Free Asia reported in February 2000, citing Liu’s wife Lin Haifen, that Liu graduated in 1989 from the polymer department of the Beijing Institute of Clothing Technology and lost his state job assignment after participating in the 1989 student democracy movement. In 1998 he assisted Xu Wenli in organizing the China Democracy Party and later held documented roles in its Beijing–Tianjin and Dalian organizations.

Principal activities and documented impact

  • 1989: participated in the student democracy movement while completing university, according to his wife’s account reported by RFA.
  • 1998–1999: worked with Xu Wenli, Zha Jianguo, Gao Hongming and others in the CDP network. Human Rights Watch reported that Liu assumed increased leadership responsibilities in the Beijing–Tianjin branch after other leaders were detained.
  • 17 September 1999: formally arrested; Human Rights Watch reported that his Dalian home was searched and address books confiscated.
  • 16 February 2000: sentenced by the Dalian Intermediate People’s Court to six years’ imprisonment for “subversion of state power.” Human Rights Watch independently records the six-year sentence.

Documented impact

Liu’s documented significance lies in sustaining CDP organizational activity after the detention of senior Beijing–Tianjin leaders during the 1998–2000 suppression. This is an observable organizational role supported by contemporaneous human-rights reporting; this profile does not infer broader achievements beyond the available evidence.
