Liu Zhihua / 刘智华 — Media Profile & Archive

This archive accompanies the canonical profile of Liu Zhihua / 刘智华, a Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory worker whose imprisonment and release were documented by human-rights organizations.

1989 case

Human Rights in China identifies Liu Zhihua as a 21-year-old worker at the Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory in 1989. Documentation places him among four factory workers punished after protests connected to the June 1989 Beijing crackdown.

The Dui Hua Foundation identifies Liu as one of the Xiangtan workers convicted of hooliganism and reports that he received a life sentence. Dui Hua later documented sentence reductions affecting the group.

Release record

Dui Hua reported that Liu Zhihua was released in May 2009, describing him as the last Tiananmen-era “hooligan” in this group to leave prison. That specific release report supports his classification as a former political prisoner. It does not establish his subsequent residence, employment, affiliations or other post-release circumstances.

Related people

Chen Gang, Peng Shi and Liu Jian were fellow Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory workers associated with the same 1989 incident. Chen Ding, Chen Gang’s younger brother, was prosecuted separately.

Evidence status

Human Rights in China supports Liu’s factory-worker identity and age. Dui Hua independently supports the conviction, life sentence and May 2009 release. Post-release whereabouts remain unresolved in the evidence reviewed for this archive.
