Mu Hua (穆华) — Political Prisoner Profile

Mu Hua (穆华)

Mu Hua (穆华), born in 1970, is a woman from Changchun City, Jilin Province. She lives in the residential building behind the Jilin Provincial Experimental Middle School on Nanhu Avenue. She is a Falun Gong practitioner. She was last documented in custody serving a four-year sentence whose recorded term runs through April 2028.

According to the case reports, before she began practicing Falun Gong, Mu suffered from severe depression, headaches, and neck problems, and at one point moved eight times in a single year. The reports describe her as finding relief through the practice and as someone who spoke up for Falun Gong after the nationwide crackdown began.

On May 13, 2020, Mu went to the provincial library, where she posted two informational materials about Falun Gong. She was reported by a security guard and arrested by officers of the Xingfu Police Station of the Nanguan District Public Security Bureau. The reports state her home was searched and her Falun Gong books, informational materials, and other personal items were confiscated. She was held in administrative detention for 15 days and then released pending trial. On September 9, 2020, officers summoned her to the Xingfu Police Station, saying the new station chief wanted to speak with her; she was then detained and held at the Changchun City No. 4 Detention Center.

In January 2021, her case was submitted to the Chaoyang District Court, which sentenced her to two years in prison. She served the term at the Jilin Provincial Women’s Prison, where the reports state she was forced to sit on a small stool for long hours and pressured to renounce her belief. Her term ended in August 2022.

On April 30, 2024, Mu was arrested at her mother’s home in Nanhu New Village by officers of the Nanhu Police Station of the Chaoyang District Public Security Bureau. The reports state that officers searched the home and confiscated her Falun Gong books and computer. In early February 2025, her family learned — through a prison-admission notice with no date, requiring a receipt — that she had been secretly sentenced to four years and taken to prison. The family had received no prior updates about her case and still did not know when she was indicted, tried, or sentenced. The recorded term runs through April 29, 2028.

The charge underlying either sentence and the facility holding her under the 2025 sentence are not stated in any available source. Her name also appears on a rights-monitoring roster of mainland Chinese in-custody political and conscience prisoners as serving a four-year sentence.
