Peng Shi / 彭实 — Media Profile & Archive

This archive accompanies the canonical profile of Peng Shi / 彭实, a Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory worker prosecuted following protests connected to the June 1989 Beijing crackdown.

1989 Xiangtan case

Human Rights in China’s Hunan documentation records Peng Shi among factory workers involved in an incident at the home of the factory public-security-section head after workers sought an explanation for violence against a protester. Authorities prosecuted him for hooliganism.

Sentence and imprisonment

The Xiangtan City Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Peng Shi to life imprisonment in August 1989. Human Rights in China reports that he was sent to Longxi Prison with Chen Gang. The Dui Hua Foundation independently identifies Peng Shi among the Xiangtan factory workers given life sentences and later reported sentence reductions affecting the group.

Status caution

No reliable individual release record has been established for Peng Shi in the evidence reviewed. Sentence reduction is not equivalent to verified release. His current status therefore remains unknown.

Related people

Chen Gang, Liu Jian and Liu Zhihua were workers linked to the same Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory prosecution. Chen Ding, Chen Gang’s younger brother, was prosecuted separately and is not treated as a co-defendant in this workers’ trial.
