Sun Chao (孙超), Yunnan House-Church Preacher in Criminal Detention

Sun Chao (Chinese: 孙超), born in 1989, is a Christian preacher from Qujing City, Yunnan Province. He serves the unregistered Fei La Tie Fei house church in Qujing, where he began full-time ministry in 2015, preaching, providing pastoral care, and visiting believers.

Sun’s family includes his wife Zhao Ying, also a Christian, and their two children. Their young son was born with congenital cataracts and requires repeated trips to Chongqing for treatment. Sun himself has epilepsy and must take medication on a regular schedule to control seizures, which can cause convulsions and loss of consciousness.

Sun has been detained three times in connection with his ministry. In April 2024 he was administratively detained by police in Kunming; in June 2025 he was administratively detained in Qujing. On July 25, 2026, Xuanwei police took him while he was preaching and placed him in 12 days of administrative detention for alleged “illegal religious activity.” When that detention expired on August 7, his wife went to the detention center to collect him and was told that he had instead been placed in criminal detention on suspicion of “organizing illegal gatherings.” He is reported to be held at the Xuanwei City Detention Center.

His family has publicly expressed concern that the detention authorities may not ensure uninterrupted access to his epilepsy medication, and his wife has appealed for attention to his health and legal rights. As of the latest reports, no trial or verdict has taken place, and no public statement about the case has been issued by the local public security authorities. Nothing further about his condition should be assumed beyond what has been reported.
