Tang Boqiao / 唐柏桥
Status: Canonical People profile. Source enrichment remains ongoing.
Tang Boqiao (also rendered Tang Baiqiao; 唐柏桥 / 唐柏橋) was a leader in the 1989 Hunan student movement, later a political prisoner, and subsequently a democracy and human-rights advocate in exile. He also contributed to research documenting the 1989 crackdown, including the Asia Watch report Anthems of Defeat.
Detention and imprisonment
Controlled source records place his detention on July 13, 1989 and formal arrest on July 29, 1989. He was sentenced on August 9, 1990 to three years’ imprisonment plus two years’ deprivation of political rights and was paroled on February 12, 1991. A United Nations government-response record indicates that he was outside China by 1994.
Organizations and public activity
Sources connect Tang to a Hunan higher-education student autonomous organization during 1989, later overseas democracy organizing, and the Free China Movement / Free China Forum. Exact historical office titles and tenure remain under primary-source verification and are not normalized here.
Evidence status
The controlled media baseline includes private archival material, Asia Watch/Human Rights Watch, United Nations material, U.S. Senate records, major U.S. press, Beijing Spring, legal scholarship and other archival sources. Original Chinese indictment, judgment, parole documentation and organization-governance records remain enrichment targets.
Free China Movement preserves source distinctions and unresolved title or chronology questions rather than inferring missing facts.
