Tang Zhiwei (汤志伟) is from Meizhou City in Guangdong Province. He is reported to be serving an eight-year prison sentence and was recorded as being in custody as of August 2026.
According to a report by Minghui (May 9, 2026) and the case record in the Chinese Human Rights Defenders’ Prisoners of Conscience database, Tang and his wife Liu Xuemei are Falun Gong practitioners. On October 11, 2025, the couple put up Falun Gong stickers and distributed flyers while under surveillance. On the evening of October 12, at about 9:50 pm, they were seized by police of the Meijiang District Public Security Bureau near their residential community, and their home was searched — officers took a laptop, a printer, Falun Gong books, and copies of Minghui Weekly. The couple were placed in criminal detention at the Meizhou City Detention Center. On November 17, 2025, the Meijiang District Procuratorate approved their formal arrest, and they were later indicted.
The report states that the couple had been closely watched for months before their arrest — strangers repeatedly harassed their clothing shop, which was forced to close — and that an earlier attempt to seize them on the evening of July 7, 2025 failed when they refused to open their door. After trial at the Meixian District Court, both were sentenced to eight years in prison and fined 120,000 yuan. No formal criminal charge is named in the available sources. The prisoners’ database gives the sentence term as ending October 11, 2033. The report notes that Liu Xuemei has appealed.
Weiquanwang Information Center’s monthly roster of political and conscience prisoners lists 汤志伟 among those in custody in its issue dated August 31, 2026, in the group reported as serving eight-year sentences.
Note: the surname is 汤, not 唐 — the Tang Zhifei (唐志飞) mentioned in the same case context is a different person, excluded from this profile.
