Background
Wang Guohui (王国辉), age about 50 at the time of his 2023 trial, is a Falun Gong practitioner from Duanjiazhuang, Jihongtan Subdistrict, Chengyang District, Qingdao, Shandong Province. His wife, Yu Chunli (于春丽), was detained and sentenced in the same case.
Detention and trial
In 2021, after repeated police harassment, Wang Guohui and Yu Chunli left their home to avoid detention. On the evening of October 27, 2022, officers of the Chengyang District State Security Brigade and the Jihongtan police station surrounded the couple’s rented residence, took both into custody, and searched the home, seizing Falun Gong books, a printer, and personal items, according to monitoring reports.
The couple were first held at the Jihongtan police station for several weeks. Reports describe poor conditions during this period: limited food, handcuffs worn for over a month, and police obstruction of lawyers’ visits. Wang Guohui developed high blood pressure symptoms while in custody. On December 15, 2022, he was transferred to an isolation facility in the Shangma Salt Industry community of Chengyang District; on February 7, 2023, both were transferred to the Pudong Detention Center. On October 18, 2023, the Jimo District Court in Qingdao tried the couple: Yu Chunli was sentenced to four years and eight months and Wang Guohui to four years and four months; both lodged appeals in court.
Current status
Wang Guohui remains in custody serving his sentence, which runs to February 26, 2027. He was listed among in-custody prisoners in the August 2026 custody report.
